The ADB-Japan Scholarship Program, fully known as the Asian Development Bank Scholarship Program aims to offer an opportunity for qualified citizens of ADB’s member countries. Qualified candidates will have the opportunity to enroll in postgraduate studies in courses like, economics, technology, management, and science, including some other development-related fields at academic institutions selected by the ADB in the Asian and Pacific Region.

After completion of their programs, scholars are required to contribute immensely to the social and economic development of their home country.

Why the ADB-Japan Scholarship Program?

The Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarships was launched in April 1988 to provide qualified citizens of ADB developing countries with the opportunity to enroll in a postgraduate degree in economics, management, science, and technology.

This scholarship was designed to help international students from ADB’s member countries take postgraduate courses in economics, technology, management, and science or development-related fields of study.

The primary aim of this scholarship is to financially support international students who are ready to contribute to the development of their country. The recipient of one of the Asian Development Bank Scholarships must be ready to return to their home country upon graduation.

Eligible Study Level/Field

Programs that are covered by the ADB-Japan Scholarship are postgraduate studies in health, education, agriculture,  economics, management, environment, natural science, resource management, technology, and other development-related fields.

Only study programs that are offered at the participating institutions in the Asian and Pacific Regions are considered for ADB-Japan Scholarship Program funding.

General Eligibility Requirements for the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarships

  1. The applicant for the ADB-Japan Scholarship program must be a citizen of an ADB borrowing developing member country.

Note: Applicants who are from countries that no longer borrow from ADB are considered ineligible for the scholarship.

  1. Applicant must have gained admission to an approved MA/PhD study program at an accepted institution.
  2. Must have obtained a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with high academic record.
  3. At least 2 years of full-time working experience as a professional at the time of application. The experience must have been acquired after the first degree.
  1. Applicants for the Asian Development Bank-Japan scholarships should not be more than 35 years old at the time of applying. In special cases, for study programs that are appropriate for only senior officials and managers, the limit in age is 45 years old.
  2. Applicant must be in good health.
  3. Must agree to return to their home country after completion of studies programs under the scholarship.
  4. Any official in the ADB-Japan Scholarship program is not eligible.
  5. Staff of the aforementioned academic institutions are considered ineligible for the scholarship.
  6. Applicants who are living or working in any other country other than their home country are considered ineligible for the scholarships.
  7. ADB-Japan Scholarship Programs do not support candidates who are already admitted to graduate degree programs.
  8. ADB-Japan Scholarship Program does not offer scholarships for undergraduate studies, short-term training, distance learning programs, conferences, seminars, research projects, and thesis writing.
  9. Applicant must also be proficient in oral and written English Language skills.

Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarships Benefits

The ADB-Japan Scholarship program provides tuition fees in full, including a subsistence and housing allowance each month.

An allowance will also be provided that will fund books, medical, instructional materials, and insurance. Travel expenses are also included.

The scholarship will last for just one year with a provision of extension opportunity to the subsequent year of study, which shall be dependent on the students maintaining a good level of academic performance as the institute of study would tell. The maximum time for a scholarship award is two years for master’s and PhD programs.

About 300 scholarships are given to 300 postgraduate students annually to cover tuition and other expenses.

Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarships Application Guidelines

  • Interested students should inquire and get application forms from the chosen institution and should indicate to the institution of study that they are applying for enrollment and that they would like to apply and be considered for the ADB-Japan Scholarship program.
  • The filled institution application form and all required documents, including the ADB-Japan Scholarship program Information sheet form, must be submitted to the institution they have chosen.
  • There is no separate application for the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarships.
  • You must submit application forms for the scholarships at least six months before the planned time that you wish to start your studies.

The procedure for applying for Asian Development Bank-Japan scholarships is outlined below:

  • Applicants must request information and application forms from the selected educational institutions. Applicants are encouraged to access a variety of resources, including institute websites and manuals, and information sessions about institutes in the country to help them make an informed decision about the institution and course they want to take.
  • Applicants must inform the university that they are applying for admission and would like to be considered for the ADB-JSP scholarship. The completed application form for the institution and the required documents, including the ADB-JSP information sheet form, must be submitted to the university or academic institution. Applicants must ensure that they submit accurate and complete documentation. Otherwise, the request will not be processed or the award will be terminated if it is later discovered that the documents or information provided are incorrect. Applicants must submit their final tax return or annual/monthly salary statement. You must also provide a certificate of family income (parents’ income).
  • The university checks and classifies the applicants according to their selection criteria, taking into account the admission requirements and the ADB selection criteria. As part of the assessment process, the academic institution can contact applicants for more information. The university will then submit its list of candidates to the ADB, including a description of the qualification/qualification system underlying the classification.
  • The ADB will review the information submitted by academic institutions and recommend the winners to the Executive Director of Japan for official approval based on the ADB selection criteria.
  • After approval by the Executive Director of Japan, the ADB informs academic institutions about the successful applicants.
  • The academic institution informs all applicants of the result of the selection process and arranges for the recipients to receive their scholarships.
  • Academic institutions will cause the winner to sign the scholarship acceptance price, stating that the individual will return to their country of origin after completing their studies.
  • The ADB sends a congratulatory letter to each student.
  • A separate request for ADB is not required. Submit scholarship applications at least six months before the scheduled time at which you want to begin your studies. See the normal month of admission and the application deadline at the participating universities.
