What are open-ended questions and examples you can ask children or students?

Open-ended questions are designed to find out more and also gather information from the individual answering the questions. Engaging someone in a conversation involves asking questions and little information shared during this conversation is important.

Open-ended questions tend to get an elaborate response from the individual answering the question. Quick responses to open-ended questions provide insight into things that interests the person answering those questions.

What Are Open-ended Questions?

Open-ended questions are direct questions that need something more than just short responses like ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. Open-ended questions tend to get an elaborate response from the individual answering the question.

Children, students, and even adults can be asked these questions. There are questions people answer to provide more information about themselves.

Conversation with Your Child Build Bonds

When a child gets to a certain age, there are some open-ended questions a parent can ask to know what the child likes and dislike. Asking open-ended questions is also a unique way for a parent to bond with the child.

It’s important to ask your child open-ended questions. It encourages more conversation with your child rather than asking closed questions.

Closed questions get quick responses like a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. Kids are amazing and just by asking these questions and starting a conversation will create a stronger relationship with them.

Open-Ended Questions Vs. Close-ended Questions

Open-ended questions are the opposite of close-ended questions and differ in various characteristics, especially the response of the person answering the questions.

Open-ended questions allow the respondent to give an opinion, while close-ended questions limit the respondent to the alternatives available (Foddy, 1993; 127)

One of the advantages of open-ended questions is the possibility of knowing the responses that people provide voluntarily. Hence avoiding the bias that may occur because of suggesting responses to people.

Communication with your child more closely is key to building a stronger bond. If you are a parent, here are a few open-ended questions you can ask your child.

#2. Out of all your friends, which one do you think I like the most and why?

#3. Who is the best teacher you ever had in school?

#4. What amount would be the ideal allowance and tell me how you would spend it?

#5. If you are given an opportunity by a genie to make one wish, what would you wish for?

#6. When you feel sad, what makes you happy?

#7. If you are given the chance to change three things about yourself, what would they be?

#8. What type of lies do your friends tell their parents?

#9. Which toy was your favourite when you were very little?

#10. What is that one you did when you were little that I didn’t know about?

#11. What do you say to yourself when you are scared?

#12. If you are given the opportunity to decorate our house, what would it look like?

#13. What is the nicest thing any of your friends has ever said to you”?

#14. Tell me about that one thing you have done in school, sports, or anywhere that you are very proud of.

Examples of Open-ended Questions for Students

The following are open-ended questions to ask students.

#1. What was the most interesting thing to you during today’s lesson?

#2. While doing the task in class, what was the most challenging thing you encountered?

#3. How will you describe this concept to a person who has never heard of it before?

#4. How is today’s topic related to the topic we discussed in class last week?

#5. When you were solving problems in the classroom, what method did you use and why?

#6. How do you feel based on the progress you have made in class, and what are the areas that you think require more improvement?

#7. What are the questions you want to ask about this topic, so we can look at them in our next lesson?

#8. Can you think of a real-life situation based on what we learned in class today?

#9. If you could change one thing about your performance doing today’s task, what changes would you make?

#10. After today’s lesson, what is the most important insight you are taking home with you?

Examples of Open-Ended Questions for Getting to Know People

Here are some open-ended questions to ask people you are getting to know more about.

#1. How did you come to love your favourite hobby?

#2. What is that one moment that remains the most memorable in your entire life?

#3. Can you tell me about the very first time we both met our mutual friend who connected the two of us?

#4. Do you have any books, TV shows, or films that you would recommend to me? And tell me how you have enjoyed them in recent times.

#5. How has your taste for music changed in recent times?

#6. Tell me about that one special restaurant experience you enjoyed so well that you can hardly forget.

#7. What was your favourite pet as a child and your fondest memory of that pet?

#8. Tell me how you spend your weekends or leisure time.

#9. What interested you the most to pursue your chosen career?

#10. If you could learn a new skill, what would it be and why would you go for it?

Examples of Open-Ended Questions for Interviews

Here are a few open-ended questions that can be asked during interviews.

#1. Tell me about yourself and how you arrived at your current position/field.

#2. Tell me about a challenging situation you have been in and how you handled it.

#3. How do you handle problem-solving and what is the best strategy that is most effective?

#4. Tell me what you consider to be your greatest strength’/

#8. What would you say are the most important qualities for success in your profession?
