Caleb’s mum, Katie comes from a family with a history of heart problems. According to sources online, Katie’s uncle died when she was just three to four years old.
Katie’s uncle suffered from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy as well just like her son. After Katie’s uncle died, other members of the family were diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).
Genetic testing was carried out on some of Katie’s family members based on the family’s history.
As a mother with three children and a woman coming from a family with a history of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), Katie often took her children for HCM screenings.
The result from those screenings showed that all of Katie’s children had normal ECGs and echocardiograms. Katie was advised to take her children for HCM screening every three to four years.
Katie had no idea that the proper medical guidelines to screen for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in families with a known diagnosis is to go for screening every year once the child hit puberty.
Two years before Caleb LeBlanc died, he had a crisis of chest pain which landed him in a hospital. Caleb was just 11 at the time when he was rushed to the Emergency Department, where doctors detected an abnormal ECG.
