Tisch School of the Arts, Asia

NYU’s first overseas campus is the result of a partnership with a Singapore government agency under Singapore’s Global Schoolhouse program. Tisch Asia is also the first art school in Singapore to offer a Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing, Film and International Media Production Animation and Digital Arts. Summer courses include professional seminars and non-credit certificate courses.

The campus was started in the fall of 2007 on the former Ministry of Education and Republic Polytechnic campus at 3 Kai Cheong Road, Singapore, with the aim of enrolling approximately 250 students. In November 2011, NYU fired Pari Sara Shirazi, president of Tisch Asia, for falling short of enrollment expectations.

In a letter to the Tisch Asia community dated November 8, 2012, Dean Mary Schmidt Campbell announced that the campus would be closed after 2014 and that admissions of new students would be suspended immediately.

While celebrating the creative and academic achievements of the Singapore campus, she cited financial challenges as the reason for the decision to close. Schmidt-Campbell pledged that NYU will deliver on its promises to current students and staff.

The letter cites support from the Singapore Economic Development Board, saying it is open to future collaborations with NYU.

Some of their graduates have extended their artistic lives beyond acting: Danai Gurira has earned acclaim as a playwright and actor, and Glenn Kessler is a talented writer and executive television producer. However, much of their creative imagination is nurtured in acting programs at the graduate level of studies.

Conclusion

NYU Tisch is an excellent training ground where students are nurtured by experts to excel in theatre arts, musical theatre, dance, filmmaking, television, etc.
